Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs have found the world of drugs that treat impotence – and the rest of the medical field – as though they were some sort of miracle cure for an already compromised penis.
But a new study, a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, has found the only cure to impotence in New Zealand.
Dr Chris Galson, an endocrinologist at St James’s University in Auckland, and his colleagues analysed the available data from the New Zealand research on erectile dysfunction and discovered that Viagra and other ED drugs were “not as effective as the placebo group”.
But there are three reasons that the drugs were not effective – not because they had worked, they were cheaper or because the drugs had the least side effects.
A recent study published in theNew Zealand Journal of Physiologyprovides the first evidence for Viagra as a treatment for impotence. Researchers looked at over 4,000 men from the general population in the Auckland region between 1980 and 2003.
They found that men who took Viagra had an erection that lasted 4.5 hours, compared with men who took placebo.
“We’ve always known that erectile dysfunction is a complex and multifactorial condition that affects the whole person and the relationship between the individual, the family and the environment,” said Dr Galson.
“But we now know that the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction are probably more complex than we thought.”
Viagra, a Pfizer-owned drug, has a reputation for treating impotence. It was first developed in the 1960s by scientists in New Zealand. Pfizer marketed Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but the drug was not licensed for medical use until 1998, when the drug was withdrawn from the market.
Dr Galson and colleagues looked at data on 4,000 men aged 20-49 in the Auckland region between 1980 and 2005. Their main findings were that the men who took Viagra did not show any clinically relevant erectile dysfunction.
They found that Viagra was “not as effective as the placebo group”.
“In general, men who took Viagra had a lower incidence of erectile dysfunction than men who took placebo,” said Dr Galson.
“They also had a shorter duration of action than men who took Viagra,” he added.
The Viagra researchers were not sure if the men who took Viagra also had a higher chance of developing a heart problem called atrial fibrillation – the narrowing of blood vessels.
They did not know whether men who took Viagra also had a higher chance of developing a stroke – or whether men who took Viagra also had a higher chance of having a heart attack.
“It’s not possible to determine whether there is a difference in risk of stroke between Viagra and placebo,” Dr Galson said.
However, he said the researchers did not know whether men who took Viagra also had a higher chance of developing a heart attack.
“There is still a long way to go to determine whether these men are at an increased risk of stroke.
“We are still very far from definitively determining whether men who take Viagra are at an increased risk of developing a heart attack,” he added.
The New Zealand study, which included over 4,000 men, is not new – and it was first published in theJournal of the American College of Cardiology, which is funded by Pfizer.
Dr Galson has written on several other subjects.
He said: “The men in the study were recruited from Auckland, who are the largest city in the world with a population of over 1.5 billion.
“The men in this study are not necessarily as healthy as the men in the men in the New Zealand study who were recruited from Auckland.”
Dr Galson said men who took Viagra had a lower incidence of heart problems than men who took placebo. In the ongoing battle to keep the drug industry from succumbing to the onslaught of patent expirations, Pfizer is set to launch a new impotence drug at the conclusion of its recent earnings per share (EPS) conference in September, bringing in a full-year EPS boost for its pharmaceuticals business.
The new drug, known as sildenafil citrate, will be marketed under the brand name Viagra® under the name Revatio®. The FDA approved sildenafil in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
However, many doctors were reluctant to embrace the new product because of concerns about its potential adverse effects on the body. This is one of the reasons the FDA has decided not to approve Viagra® in the first place. Sildenafil is a type of drug called a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis. This helps men get and keep an erection.
Viagra® was introduced to market in 1998 and is the brand name of Pfizer’s Viagra. It is the drug’s generic name, and is used to treat the same conditions as other ED medications. The drug is manufactured by Pfizer’s own company, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.
Sildenafil is also available in the same strengths as Viagra®, but under a different name. It is available as 50mg and 100mg tablets, and is only for men who take Viagra® as well. The difference is that the 100mg version of the drug is much more expensive than the 50mg version, but the 100mg version of the drug is more affordable for men who do not have insurance. The price difference between Viagra and sildenafil is a significant one, but the medication is not the same as Viagra® in terms of efficacy.
As of now, sildenafil is the only drug on the market approved by the FDA to treat ED. However, the approval of sildenafil in 1998 is not a complete failure. Pfizer has taken a step in the right direction by making Viagra available for patients who have ED. But, like all other ED drugs, sildenafil is a little bit of an afterthought, and has a strong chance of causing side effects. It is important to remember that ED is caused by a combination of both psychological and physiological factors.
Sildenafil is the brand name of sildenafil citrate, which is a type of drug called a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It is available in both a 50mg and 100mg tablet, and is only available in two strengths: 50mg and 100mg. The 100mg version of sildenafil is a little more expensive than the 50mg version, but the 100mg version of the drug is more affordable for men who do not have insurance.
The drug was developed by Pfizer’s pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, and was first marketed as an erectile dysfunction medication in 1998. The company was not aware of the new product, but it was approved for marketing in the United States in 2006. Since then, sildenafil has become a leading choice for treating ED in many countries. In Canada, sildenafil is available in tablets of 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg, and is approved for marketing in more than 80 countries.
Sildenafil has been on the market since 1998, and is the brand name of Pfizer’s Viagra®. It is the drug’s generic name, and is the only drug approved by the FDA to treat ED. Viagra® is a brand-name version of the drug and is only available in two strengths: 50mg and 100mg. Viagra® is also the generic version of sildenafil, which is a little more expensive than the 50mg version of the drug.
Pfizer is working on a new product that is similar to Viagra®. It is called Sildenafil CR, and is a medication designed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It is a combination of two drugs: Sildenafil and Viagra®.
The FDA approved sildenafil CR in 1997, and it has since been used off-label for ED. It was first approved for treatment of ED in 1998, and has since been used off-label for ED.
